My buddy Kevin McGillivray called me up and said, “let’s go”………. I thought he was crazy being as there wasn’t a breath of wind anywhere in sight. He said the famous words, “Trust me!” I have to admit I had no faith so I brought a surfboard along as insurance.

We arrived to a glassy and perfect swell- just pumping. We met another friend Taylor down there and he was shaking his head seeing the perfect waves with zero wind on them……..

After being introduced to the local crew at Leo Carrillo (who are a great bunch of guys) Kevin and I decided to paddle out for a surf. Now I don’t surf much because it takes a great wave and not a large crowd to get me fired up…… but I didn’t care at this point, it was awesome out there. Got about 10 good waves and came in- still glassy at 5pm.

The boys were saying another hour….. I think they had been saying that since 3 but what’s another hour right? Six o’clock rolled around and someone said give it another hour- I laughed and said yeah right. I then said, I’m giving it till 6:30 and I’m out of here……….. My friend Taylor gave up at 6:20 and left. This may have been the piece of puzzle we were missing- At 6:31, I set foot in the water on a 5.7 and 3S 97- straight into the line up. Offshore wind was light but plenty to get out and pick off some waves. I caught one after the other, slowly the crew started coming out. I went in and traded out for a 5.3 so Kev Mc could slog out on his Pocket 84- it was a blast!

Here are a couple pics to document the festivities. After the session ended at near dark, the local boys told stories of how good this place can be- I have no doubts in my mind now as this is a one of a kind set up! I’ll see you guys again- thanks for sharing your break with me…… save some wind and waves for later next week!

Im sooooo Bitter!!!!! I sat on that beach for three hours listening to Kev tell me how it was going to pick up. When 6 o'clock rolled around and it still wasn't looking good. I had to leave... You guys are lucky I wasn't there to make you look bad. Hahaaa For all the times Ive told Kevin to roll up to Arroyo with no wind or waves I guess it was my turn to get skunked and be the no wind victim. Maybe next time.

I caught one wave early, but had to leave just as the wind was coming up. I'm glad you got it at our local spot!

Great post Matt.
Thanks for the visit and anointing our local waters (with holy pee I assume).
I expect we will have great wind and waves for the rest of the summer.
Sorry we couldn\\\'t offer you more wind to play with, but you and Kevin M made it look easy. Hopefully on your next visit the conditions will be better.

Good luck with your clinic in SF

P.S. a belated Happy Birthday!!

I wish I could go sail head high waves on big gear. Sounds Fun.

Well TEC, I saw you get out for a few yesterday. While the waves weren't as lined up, there was still some size present. You had to pay with a couple of "rinsings", but I'm sure it was worth it.
Wind-wise, it's been a very dismal July for us here. August is a welcome month change, we hope.
Re: The pic's: Would you guys do me a favor next time and use shorter masts? That way I wouldn't be forced to cut the top off of them. I need to work on my framing/zoom settings. But, I'm glad that I could catch some of the action anyway. Good show, Matt and Kevin.

"You guys are lucky I wasn't there to make you look bad." Good one. : -)

Matt, was that a 09 production 3S?
I had a 3S 97 in 2006. This board gave me one of my best lighter wind wave sessions ever even with my 70 kilos.

Now I´m getting a 09 3S 76 and a Pocket 69. With my weight I hope the 3S will give me ok riding. The purpose of the board is also stronger wind freestyle and b&j. (I have a 100 liter freestyle for flat water).

nice photos! glad you are getting in some sailing just in case you decide to go back on tour and tear it up! saturday, I took the 97 3s with 4 straps on the outside and ripped around! super fun, easy and love it as my light wind board. monday put me on the 69 pocket with a 3.7 manic - that board handled like a dream! I won't disclose my kilos...

enjoy vacation!
