New Tip Video E-mail
Written by Kevin Pritchard
Wednesday, 17 September 2008

Well here is another cool video for you guys. Hope you enjoy it because these how to video's are not that much fun to make, but Matt and I think that these tips will help out the general windsurfer and maybe you guys can go sailing more and have more fun when you are out on the water!!

I changed up the quality of the export as well so if you think it looks any better or higher quality let me know. Also if you go to our video tab you can see it a bit bigger than you can in this post.. A little nicer to watch!

Thanx for the input and keep em coming! By video it\\\'s always easier to pick up also for beginners, if you do it right!

I didntquite get the outhaul part. I know what 'more outhaul' means, but did you guys mean by 'more outhaul' pulling the rope tighter and creating a more flat sail? or just the other way around and creating a more hollow sail?

Rudie, by more outhaul, i mean pulling the rope tighter. The stronger the wind, the more outhaul you can pull.... and vice versa. The lighter the wind, the less outhaul you will want to pull. A general rule of thumb for the least amount of outhaul is to keep the sail from gaping over the boom- it is ok for the sail to touch the boom although I suggest pulling enough outhaul so that it only touches the boom when loaded up with wind. If it is touching on the beach, chances are you need to pull some more...... hope this make sense?

Props to Kev for making such a great production..... i have the easy job of flapping and he spends the hours in front of the computer........
6"boom height"
at Thursday, 18 September 2008 10:20by rebecca
thanks soooo much for the free lessons on all of the videos, they are very helpful and I need help!

if my boom is that high, I don\\\'t feel as if I have leverage over my wave sail so maybe I need longer lines (24\\\" now)? on slalom gear I raise the boom & lengthen the lines. what\\\'s the best way to measure boom height? while on my board or before I attach my sail?

thanks again pritchard brothers!!!

8"Boom Height"

Rebecca,
I think your boom should be set at or slightly below chin height with the board and sail attached. Stick your fin in the sand and stand on the board to get an exact measurement- You don't want to have leverage over your wave sail, you want to control the sail- with your boom too low, the sail is pulling you around and you can't control it as easily. Think of the physics involved- if your boom is low the top of the sail is going to be pulling you making you want to catapult forward. If it is higher, you can control the sail more easily....... make sense? try it and you will see- and yes, you probably should lengthen your harness lines. Let those arms out. I would suggest trying a 24 and see how you like that! Hope this helps!

And RAFA- Thanks for the good words! Much appreciated.

Nice video! Even though I've been windsurfing a long time, I think it is great to get advice from you and Matt. I love it all, from rigging to the technical stuff about boards and sails. We can always learn something new, no matter how simple or complex!

I'd love to see more videos like this. Good way for you guys to show/display/discuss product as well. As a request, would love to hear you and Matt discuss the new twin fin rage!

Keep up the great work!

mahalo for the tips very helpful. my question is I have a 84 pocketwave and was wondering where I should set my mast back middle forward and the fin. love the board very fun turns sweet but the balance is off a little.

14"Pocket 84"
at Saturday, 20 September 2008 07:54by MP
Hey Kris, the Pocket 84 is a big favorite in the Tabou range- it sounds like you may be using it in very light winds? I put the mastrack about 1" forward of the center. As for the fin, I move that around a bit depending on the conditions. In smaller waves, I move it forward so I can make tighter turns. In bigger waves, I move it back a bit- we are talking not much movement here- sometimes only 1/4 inch- I"m picky..... As for balance, if you are slogging, don't be afraid to put your foot in front of the mastrack to get a better balance. You are better off to sink the entire board rather than the tail section. With these new school short boards you have to be more over the center when you are not planing on them- Make sense? Hope this helps....

Hey Kris,
I set my Pocket 84 with the front straps all the way forward and the back strap 2nd furthest back. This gives me a comfortable stance for my height. Depending on your skill level, i would suggest starting with the straps all the way forward and seeing how that works for you. The better and more comfortable you get with that setup, start moving the back strap further back. This will enable you to control the board better in the turns- making them tighter and tighter.

Great little video and tips guys! As an idea for a future video, I bet a lot of people would like a video of you guys and maybe another team rider or two discussion twin fins vs single fins (or other subjects). Just a talk story session caught on camera - very little video editing required. Just a thought.
